23 Submarines is inspired by the three wrecks of World War I submarines which lie on the banks of the River Medway. Led by performance poet Dan Simpson, the poetry strand commissioned six local poets to compose new poems responding to these stories and objects.
Dan is leading workshops for emerging writers, local residents, and families. The output of these will form the basis of an outdoor poetry trail across Medway’s five town centres, leading into the libraries. Local writers will take part in library ‘open mic’ performance nights.
What happens when you put a poet in a Roman Museum? After walking from London to Canterbury - meeting PhD students and archeologists, and visiting sites of historical interest along the way - poet Dan Simpson is in-residence at Canterbury's Roman Museum. He's written poems in response to the artefacts and the people he's met on the project. In this hour created for Apples and Snakes, he'll share the poems he's created and the discoveries he's made.
